Issues that deserve a
second thought

Everyday we are virtually bombarded with news and information about events going on around us.
We read the headlines and compare shocking details, often shaking our heads at how grim the world has become.

But how often do we seriously think about what led to the events in the headlines, or think deeper about the issues? In News flashback, we highlight the issues that have captured our minds or keep recurring, and try to think a little deeper into what the source of the problem is, and what we can do about it.

Reflections

It's shocking to hear of teen mothers abandoning or killing their babies, and it's hard to imagine what it must be like for them, or what the right thing to do was.

We read about these young mothers and shake our heads but we don't realize what it means to be all alone and afraid, desperate to avoid the scorn and shame of an unforgiving world. It must be terrible to dump your baby, but it must be even more terrible to suffer and fear the world that would make you do so.

But what about the father of the child?  He is normally not mentioned in the news and usually gets away "scott" free. Is this fair?

It is easy to put blame, but isn't it clear that there is a lack of love here, a lack of love shown from parents and family to these young mothers, a tolerance and love that would accept them despite their mistakes (and despite their hardship). If only we had shown more love to them, not blamed one side or the other, but taken a collective position & responsibility towards pre-marital sex, then perhaps these tragedies could have been avoided.

  2. If you are a girl, who is the first person you would talk to if you were pregnant?

  3. If you were a boy, what would you do if your girl friend tells you that she was pregnant? What do you think someone who is thinking of abandoning his or her baby should do?

  4. "The responsibility of pregnancy rests squarely with the girl." Do you think this is true?
